I live in a fucked up area of the country. First of all...we spawned DEVO. We also are home to Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders. We make blimps . We started Alcoholics Anonymous . We had over 25% of the State's methamphetamine lab seizures in our Summit County, 43 of those in Akron alone! Since I'm a mage I am rather fond of our eccentric roads systems but Akron's doesn't run on any grid system and can be really confusing for out-of-town motorists. We even change our road name quite frequently (without telling anyone) and a northbound street will rapidly
become an eastbound one, or will stop and continue elsewhere. But we won't tell you where. We're allergic to detour signs.
LeBron James is from Akron, as is Jim Jarmusch , Heather Kozar, Mark Mothersbaugh , Thurman Munson , Butch
Reynolds, Angie Everhart , Rex Humbard (who I happen to be related to) and Jeffrey Dahmer (who I happened to ride a school bus with.)
Which brings me to my topic today. Somewhere in the early 1990's I read a statistic that 50% of inmates on Death
Row were from Ohio. I found out it the LATE nineties that one of my roommates (we had about 8 people living in our house back then) from 5 years earlier *was one of them!!!* *[Keith G. currently serving time in Kansas]* We have a
disproportionate amount of sex offenders. There is something in the water or the air that makes us a little weird. And not the "good" weird. The normals that live here have this "puritanical work ethic" whereby you need to spend all of your conscious hours pursuing some sort of work dedicated to others. Not service, mind you...just work. I
think that comes from our Quaker backgrounds. We just are pained at having any sort of fun. Except drinking, people here like to drink until they are miserable...buy now we're back to the whole beginning of AA thing!
So years ago (after encountering one of those sex offenders as a kid) I pretty much cut myself from the social fabric and began my life as an outside observer of the systems. I still can't make much sense of it, but I'm pretty glad that I took the red pill. I wouldn't have made a very good Tomato Festival Queen of the County Fair. No way.
So...anyone have any idea of why Ohio is so weird? I'd love to hear the theories...
